The political science major is designed to expose students to the philosophical and practical problems of political organization, action, and governance and to encourage critical thinking about the nature of citizenship, rights, and duties in the modern world.

The Department of Political Science offers a wide range of courses that students have found useful in preparation for careers in law, government service, and public affairs.  The department curriculum is designed to provide an in-depth understanding of politics and government in the United States, foreign countries, and the international system.

Undergraduate - Bachelor of Arts

Our nationally-recognized faculty and exciting, challenging courses in the areas of American and public policy, international politics, and methodology offer a rich and rewarding academic experience in a field with multiple career opportunities.

A degree in political science provides a solid foundation for careers in law, government service and national security, among others.

Courses are equally valuable for career-oriented majors and for students interested in developing a well-rounded liberal arts background.


Eligible students should plan to take Introduction to Political Science before applying to Rutgers. Applicants must apply and be accepted to Rutgers-New Brunswick.
